The Paradox of Being Informed

One of the common complaints of academia is that Academics are not smartest people in the room, they are just the ones with the most knowledge. It is said that Academics hoard the knowledge to ensure that they retain a relative information advantage over those around them which in turn ensures that their importance and status in their organisations and in society is maintained. While this is an interesting theory, I am not sure whether either the premise that academics hold on to knowledge or the reasons they do this hold true.

I was once given advice from a former boss – “The more you know about something, the more you need to tell others”. This was important advice because I have found that when your level of knowledge on a subject goes up, you can tend to assume that others are similarly informed. This is not always the case.

If you hold the knowledge on something it is imperative that you share it with those around you.

So – when you feel well informed on an important issue, make sure you harness that feeling and share the information with those around you that need to know. As a result, your organisation will be better informed and you will achieve a better outcome together.
